Public Awareness Program on 8th July 2025
Even after so much advancement of in the fields like m-RNA screening , diagnostic Imaging , recent medical RX & uplift of surgical skills in Endometriosis ,none of the 2000 + girls or so nor any teacher is familiar with the name Endometriosis although few know about the ‘Cyst in the Ovary’. Yes , the place is nearly 100 km from Kolkata & a symbolic rural Indian venue was a totally neglected, unsupervised, unhygienic multistoried building with huge campus & playground- the Madhya Gurguria Govt. High School ,Maipith Rd, 24 Parg(S) at Sunderban area, WB, where in a day ( 8th July,2025) as challenged by torrential rain , long four plus four hours journey on bumpy roads with potholes & waterlogged areas and unpredictability at every step - three senior doctors , Dr Nupur Chakraborty , Dr Dhruba Roy & myself reached there on behalf of ESI for a PA program with AV presentation in a fully packed hall with girl students. Kunal Sarkar & Preyashi Ghosh – The two ‘Endo Warriors’ were exceptional in providing skilled specialized service. The students wanted to know more, more & more with intensified interaction to quench their thirst. Spontaneous participation in ‘Endo-awareness Rally’ with heartfelt greeting, gratitude & invitation as offered to us by teenaged girls proved how much they were benefited. I am satisfied in the sense that the program had fulfilled my mission so far attention, appreciation & ‘knowing the unknown areas’ by the students which they are facing or suffering every day or month. In contrast I wondered to face the gloomy reality as ,i) hyper enthusiasm to organize brainstorming conferences in city in 5-7 star venues spending crores of rupee, ii) lack of interest by next-Gen colleagues in PA programs with screening the adolescents in the truest sense, iii) reluctance by sponsors for this non-profitable areas ,iv) sporadic showcasing in metro areas in March – the Endometriosis Awareness Month , iv) escaping attitude by most of us by pushing the ball to Govt.’s court & many more.
Hope against hope is always there. All the girls of that school (including those who could not attend) complied with screening protocol of ESI. At least 2/3 of the girls had progressive dysmenorrhea & NMPP( Non Menstrual Pelvic Pain). Digital link, platform & correspondence would be provided to them very soon. Unless the major population of India who resides in remote rural areas are being made aware on this dreadful disease & manage at the earliest by striking at the root – the Peri-adolescents - the modern amenities to treat with pride Gr II- III-IV disease in a city or urban areas would have limited practical value in a developing / Low or Middle Income country .
